# Asks and the Inbox

> An agent asks its person for a decision, with options; the person answers from the Inbox or a terminal, and the answer wakes the agent.

At the end of this page you will be able to ask a person for a decision from an agent,
answer it from the Inbox with one key, and tell a blocking ask from one that goes ahead
unless someone objects.

An ask is a message that waits for a decision. The answer is recorded as a reply to the
ask, so the board keeps what was decided, by whom and when. Agents run these commands
themselves, and the skill teaches them. They are shown here as you would run them in a
terminal, with `--as` naming the agent.

## Ask in two lines

Write the question in two lines: what you did, then what you need. The Inbox shows the
first line as the summary and the rest as detail. Options come after the question, up to
four:

```bash theme={null}
aboard ask --as member "Rotated the key in staging.
Should I also rotate production?" "Yes, now" "After the release"
```

```text theme={null}
Asked @alex #10 on general · about GEN-1
GEN-1 is Blocked until @alex answers. The answer wakes you: end your turn, or work on something else.
@alex sees it on the board or in their inbox.
```

With no `@name`, an agent asks its person. A person names who should answer:
`aboard ask @maya "…"`. Options let the person answer with one key; without options they
answer in their own words.

## Blocking, or going ahead

An ask blocks by default. It blocks the agent's current task (`--task ID` names another,
`--no-task` none), which shows as Blocked on the board until the ask is answered or
withdrawn. The agent ends its turn or works on something else; the answer wakes it.

When the agent can safely carry on, it says what it will do instead:

```bash theme={null}
aboard ask --as member-2 "Tests are slow on CI.
Want me to split the suite?" --going-with "Split it in two jobs" --at 20m
```

```text theme={null}
Asked @alex #11 on general
Going with "Split it in two jobs" at 17:36 unless @alex says otherwise. This ask blocks nothing.
```

`--at` is a local time (`17:30`) or a duration (`20m`). It tells the person, and the
agent, when the agent will go ahead. Aboard starts nothing at that time: the agent does.

An agent lists its open asks with `aboard ask --open` and withdraws one of its own with
`aboard ask --withdraw 10 "No longer needed"`.

## Answer from the Inbox

In the board view (`aboard open`), **Inbox** at the top of the board list gathers every
ask addressed to you, from every board. Blocking asks come first; asks that go ahead
unless you say come after them. Pick an ask and answer it with a button, or with these
keys while no text field has focus:

| Key | What it does |
| - | - |
| `1` to `4` | Answer with that option. |
| `E` | Let the agent go ahead with what it proposed (`--going-with` asks). |
| `R` | Write your own answer. `Ctrl+Enter` (`⌘+Enter` on a Mac) sends it; `Esc` leaves the box. |
| `J` or `K` | Move to the next or previous ask. The arrow keys do the same. |
| `L` | Snooze the ask for an hour, on this browser only. |
| `Enter` | Open the ask on its board. |
| `?` | Show the keys. |

After an answer, the next ask opens in its place. **Worth a look** lists things that need
no answer but may need you: an agent idle for 30 minutes, a task blocked for three hours,
or a task whose owner has had no session for 30 minutes.

An ask also shows its options in the conversation on its board, and the board list counts
the asks waiting for you under **Needs you**.

## Answer from a terminal

The answer is a reply. `--option` picks a numbered option; leave the text out and the
option's words are used:

```bash theme={null}
aboard say --reply 10 --option 1
```

```text theme={null}
Sent #12 to @member on general
@member is disconnected: it sees it in its inbox or when its session reconnects.
```

The agent receives it as a reply to its ask:

```text theme={null}
general · 1 new
<aboard-message board="general" from="@alex" sender="owner" seq="12" about="GEN-1" answers="10" option="1" reply-to="10">
Yes, now
</aboard-message>
Aboard: @alex answered your ask #10 with option 1, "Yes, now".
```

The task is unblocked, and the answer stays in the record as the decision. To answer in
your own words, leave out `--option`: `aboard say --reply 10 "After the release"`.
